Two ways to redo carpeted stairs

Hardwood treads and risers, about $150 to $200 per step. The carpet comes off, the old treads are replaced with hardwood, and they're stained and finished to match.
Capped stairs, about $85 to $125 per step. The steps are covered in the same vinyl or laminate as your floor with a matching stair nosing on each edge. Less money, and the stairs match the floor exactly.

What happens on the day

We pull the carpet, tack strip and staples, then fit the new treads or caps. Nosings go on last, and the stairs are swept when we're done.
